DRAGON NATURALLY SPEAKING – THE ESSENTIALS

A Website Dedicated to Helping You Make the Most of Talking to Your Computer With Dragon

ABOUT THIS SITE

The information on this page, and in the Downloadable RTF file, is a collection of information about the basic commands and techniques that will get you started with successfully using Dragon. There is information that will enable you to dictate and edit text as well as giving commands to your computer.

Wake Up
Turns the Microphone indicator Green. Puts Dragon into a Listening mode so that everything the Microphone hears is treated as a possible command or dictated text.
The command: “Listen to Me” will also work.

Go to Sleep
Turns the Microphone indicator Blue. Puts Dragon into a not listening mode. When the microphone is sleeping, everything that is said within range of the microphone is monitored. Keeping the microphone in Sleeping state while a lot of talking and general background noise is going on will affect system resources on any computer.
The command: Stop listening will also work.

Microphone Off
Turns the Microphone indicator Red. Turns the microphone off so that it isn’t listening at all. If you are leaving the computer and Dragon running, but you are in the room doing other tasks, particularly talking to others or on the phone, use this option.
When the microphone is off it cannot be turned on with a voice command, you have to click the Microphone indicator.

Open Dictation Box
- Dictation Box is a text editor that is built into Dragon. Use it to create text and then select and copy and paste it into other applications. It is often more accurate than dictating directly into a program such as a webpage form. Once you have the text dictated into the Dictation Box say: Click Transfer to have that text typed into the place where you left off. This can be used for email, word processing and when filling in webpage forms.

You can capitalize a letter by saying “Press Cap,” then the letter - For example: Press Cap R to type a capital R. You can press numbers (0 to 9) by saying “Press” and then the number. For example, say “Press 8.” NOTE: Dragon ignores the command “Press Control Alt Delete” (the keyboard shortcut for restarting the computer).

To dictate consecutive words in all lowercase letters:
1. Say “No Caps On” to turn no capitals on. 2. Dictate the words you want to appear in all lowercase. 3. Say “No Caps Off” to turn no capitals off.

To capitalize or uncapitalize text:
1. Select the text you want to change. 2. Say “Capitalize That,” “Cap That,” or “All Caps That,” or “Uncapitalize That,” “Uncap That,” or “No Caps That.”

Below are some example of how to dictate dates and dollar amounts:

Dictate Email and Web addresses as you would normally say them.
Dragon automatically formats them for you. Dictating email and web addresses in the Dictation Box is preferable. Here are some guidelines for dictating e-mail and Web addresses:

If Dragon has difficulty understand which letter of the alphabet you are dictating used the following guide to help Dragon understand you better:

Although many of the commands listed on this page have multiple ways to phrase them, when first beginning to work with Dragon pick a command that works for a given situation and always phrase the command that way. Stay consistent with the command you selected and you will memorize it more quickly.

A Basic Correction Technique
Select the word you want to correct using “Select Word” Give the Correction command: “Correct That” A dialog box will open providing choices for correcting the text. When you decide which one you want in place of the selected word say: “Choose x”

An Alternate Correction Technique
Select the word or phrase you want to change using Select Forward (x up to 20) Words Say: “Delete That” to remove the unwanted words (just the ones selected) Say the phrase you want in that place.

Clicking Things!
Saying the word “Click” in front of an item, such as an icon or button, will cause Dragon to put the mouse on that item and perform a Left Single Click. A handy use for this is when a dialog box or message box appears on the screen and you need to click the Cancel Button. You will say: “Click Cancel” If something needs to be Double-Clicked the phrase “Double Click X” will be used.

Multitasking
If your style of working on the computer involves keeping several windows, applications, open simultaneously then it will be important to know how to get Dragon to switch between them. A good first command to learn is: “List All Windows”. From this list you will be able to choose, by number, the window that you need to work in next.

Back to list of categories

To make the most effective use of Dragon you need to know how to control the computer using the keyboard at times. Some of the most important keyboard commands to get you started are listed below.

Press followed by any key on the keyboard will cause Dragon to type that key for you. The word Type followed by any key on the keyboard will also type that key for you. Figure out which of these that Dragon understands better for you and use it consistently.
Here are a few to remember:

Letters of the alphabet and number keys work with this command as well. Saying: Press g will type a g in your document. Saying: Press SHIFT plus g will type a Capital G

Then you will say: “Choose 3” to choose the third text field. Note: This feature is not as useful on a very busy webpage as it is on a cleaner one if you are a visually impaired Dragon user. Say:

CLICKING ON LINKS THAT YOU TAB TO
One way to get to Links on a webpage is to say: “Press TAB Key” until the focus lands on the link you want to click on. Once there you can get Dragon to either open that Link in a New Window or a New TAB using the following commands. Opening a Link in a new TAB will always be preferable to clicking it and opening it in the same window.

Send e-mail to "contact"
- Creates and email that is addressed to the identified Contact. Remember that this only works if you have included the email address in Contacts

Create Email
- The focus in a new email message is in the To: field ready for the email address. There are a couple of suggestions that work for entering the email into the To: field accurately: Try saying: Switch to Spell Mode and then dictate the address character by character. It will be very accurate and save time redoing it. You can dictate the email address into the Dictation Box first, giving you a more effective place to edit it and also to create a string of email addresses with semi-colons between for sending to multiple people. Again, this suggestion improves accuracy. Once the address(es) are dictated in the Dictation Box, say: Click Transfer. This puts you back in the To: field of the message. Then say: Paste That. No more editing should be needed as you would have done it all within the Dictation Box.

When moving between fields in the new email say:

When you are ready to send the message you can say one of the following commands:
Send Message

Whether the message you want to reply to is open or closed and highlighted in the Inbox, the command to reply is:
Reply to email The cursor will be positioned in the body of the reply. If you want to make sure the cursor is at the top of the message, above the text you are replying to, say: Go to Top

Whether the message you want to Forward is open or closed and highlighted in the Inbox, the command to reply is:
Forward email The cursor will be positioned in the To field of the message ready for you to dictate an address. Use the information above about dictating email addresses accurately.

From within the list of messages you can delete a message by saying:
Delete Message

Once you have created an email and you are ready to add an attachment, do as follows:
Say: Click Attach File In the Insert File Dialog Box, say: Press Shift TAB and then say: Press SHIFT TAB again. Now you will be in the list of available files in the Documents folder. Navigate to the file as you would within File Explorer Once you have the file you want attached highlighted, say:
Click Insert Now you are ready to send the email with the Send Message command

To Open an attachment from an Open message:
Say: Mouse Grid Use the numbers within the grid to narrow down to the attachments list that is just above the body of the message When the mouse is pointing at the name of the attachment that you want to open say: Mouse Double Click. The attachment will open in the program that is the default choice on your computer for opening that file type.

If you want to Save a file that is attached to an email do as follows:
Say: Save Attachment This puts the Save Attachment dialog box on the screen Say: Click OK Now the focus is in the Save As dialog box where you will confirm that you know where you are saving the attachment and that you have given it a name that is appropriate. Say: Click OK

To Move a message from the Inbox to another folder that has already been created you will start by saying:
Move Message to Folder This results in the Move Message dialog box appearing on the screen. Use the Move Down X Lines and Move Up X Lines to highlight the folder you want to move the message to and then say: Click Ok.

The process is similar with copying a message except that the command is:
Copy Message to Folder It is good practice to move or copy messages from the Inbox list rather than when the message is open.

To get to the Contacts screens in Outlook, say:
Open Contacts

To get back to the Inbox, say:
Open Inbox

To create a new contact, say:
New Contact - You do not need to be in the Contacts screens to do this.

To get to the Calendar screens in Outlook, say:
Open Calendar

To create a new calendar event, say:
New Appointment - You do not need to be in the Calendar screens to do this. Within the New Appointment screen you can say: Location Field to get to the Location after dictating the subject of the appointment. To get to the Start Time and End Time say: Click Start Time and Click End Time respectively. To move from the Start Date or End Date portion of these fields it is most efficient to say: Press TAB. Once all of the details are in the appointment say: Click Save and Close. Navigating to an appointment to edit it requires that you say: Open Calendar. Then say: Click Home if the focus isn’t already on the Home ribbon at the top of the screen. Then say: Click Month to see an overview of all appointments going on in the current month.

To move between appointments within the current view:
Month is used in this example, say: Press TAB. The focus will only move from one appointment to the next when the TAB key is used. This works in all view options.

If an appointment needs to be changed. Once focus has moved to it, say:
Press ENTER. Appointments are edited in the same screen that was used to create them. Just say: Click Save and Close when you are done to save changes. The command for moving between Days is CTRL + LEFT and CRL + RIGHT ARROW. To accomplish this in the Outlook Calendar, say: Press Control Left Arrow or Press Control Right Arrow. This works on the Day, Week and Month views.

To go to a specific date say:
Press Control G. Then dictate the date you want to go to and say: Click OK. This will move to the desired date without changing the current view.

The information below is helpful if you are using Zoomtext and Dragon together
There are keyboard shortcuts that can be assigned to control the Microphone. Using these will prevent having to find the Dragon Bar to check the status of the microphone so often. Use the Dragon / Tools / Options to learn and change these keyboard shortcuts.

Always Run All Windows Maximized
– When a new Window or Document is opened, say: “Maximize Window” Keep the Zoomtext Cursor and Pointer Enhancements turned On to help with locating Cursor and Mouse Pointer when switching windows and the like. Use “List All Windows” to switch to another running application. “Start” is the keyword to use prior to the name of the program or window that you want to open. For example, you can say: “Start Documents” if you want to get to the list of all of your files.

When the Documents Window is Open
- Speak the character of the name of the document you want to move to for getting there more quickly. When the document you want to Open is highlighted, say: “Press ENTER” to open it.

If you cannot see the Cursor (vertical line with Blue Triangles), say:
“Switch to Next Window” than say: “Switch to Previous Window”

If you don’t see the Mouse Pointer, say:
“Press Control Shift B”

In Zoomtext the setting for Tracking Tool Tips should be set to on

Controlling the Zoom Window and App Reader

Note the 4 commands below it is often necessary to say the command twice
